"Alongside this, leaders harness the diverse nature of the school. This helps pupils to see the world through the lens of others. Pupils show high levels of respect for everyone, including people who are different to them. They know that any kind of discrimination is wrong. They insist that everyone should be welcome in their school" Ash Croft Primary Academy OfSTED Report, October 2022.

"Pupils and staff celebrate the diversity of the school community. Leaders work hard to establish effective communication with parents. Parents support the school through checking the multi-lingual signs around the school and helping to plan an ‘International Day’. Pupils appreciate parents’ presentations about cultures from around the world. They enjoy sharing the variety of languages that they speak with each other through the ‘Languages Club’. They are proud to be part of a school which values different cultures, explaining, ‘If there wasn’t difference in the world, how would we grow and change as human beings?’ " Windmill (L.E.A.D.) Academy OfSTED Report February 2019.

'One teacher making a real difference in this area is Sally Roberts. A specialist EAL consultant and peripatetic EAL teacher, Sally is dedicated to transforming the teaching of EAL children in the UK. Working in Nottingham, in schools with up to 90% EAL learners, Sally has put in place a number of initiatives that have had a real impact on EAL learning.' Yzanne Mackay, The Voices that Don't get Heard: Why a Child's Mother Tongue Matters

"The school’s international unit in Key Stage 2 is very effective. Pupils attend the provision if they arrive at the school with little or no English. The teacher’s high expectations and expertise enables pupils to gain quickly a good knowledge of English grammar. Pupils make rapid progress..." Berridge Junior School OfSTED Report 2017.

CGP's KS2 EAL Workbook written by Sally Roberts and Cristina Taylor: Just had a look at the 'New to English' version, Sally - amazing! The vocabulary and grammar seems very focussed on supporting the primary pupil learning through EAL in the mainstream classroom - rather than unconnected English exercises. It's clever how you've embedded the translanguaging ethos (e.g. 'How do you say that in your language?') and are raising intercultural awareness (e.g. a typical day for a child in Spain). I can see these books being very helpful as part of a whole school EAL strategy and it's great to see substitution tables being used so effectively. Thanks to you and Cristina for all your hard work! I hope these resources will inspire and support schools to develop the English langage proficiency of all their pupils learning through EAL. Catherine Brennan (Better Bilingual)
